What counts as a bespoke polythene specification?

A bespoke polythene specification is any product built to your requirement rather than pulled from a standard range. That can be as simple as a familiar bag in a size nobody stocks, or as involved as a new film with its own blend, gauge, colour and finish. We manufacture to a standard product, to a specific size or colour, printed to your artwork, or as a completely bespoke film.

Because we extrude as well as convert at our Blackburn factory, the film itself is part of what you are specifying. Strength, elasticity, slip, stiffness, thickness and recycled content can all be adjusted, which is the difference between having a bag made and having a material made.

What information do you need to quote a bespoke film?

To quote a bespoke polythene film or bag, we need to know what goes in it, how heavy it is, whether it has corners or edges that can puncture, how the pack is filled and sealed, how it is stored and transported, and how long it has to last. Dimensions and gauge help, but the job the pack has to do matters more, because that is what shows where a specification will fail.

Send whatever you already have: a sample of what you buy now, a drawing, a photograph of the packing station, or a plain description of what keeps going wrong. If you do not know the gauge you need, say so. Working that out is part of the quote, not something you have to solve first.

How does a bespoke run work from enquiry to delivery?

A bespoke run starts with a conversation about the application, followed by a recommended specification and a quotation. Many customers then take a one-off trial quantity so the material can be run on the real line before they commit to volume, and we support one-off bespoke trials for exactly that reason. Once the specification is signed off it goes into production, and we deliver UK-wide from Blackburn.

Bespoke runs are typically 2 to 3 weeks. Repeat orders on a settled specification are quicker, because the blend, size and print are already proven. Minimum order quantity varies by product and gauge, so it is worth asking about your specific item rather than assuming a number.

When is bespoke worth it compared with a standard product?

Bespoke is worth it when a standard product is costing you something you can measure: bags splitting and causing damage in transit, operators double bagging, packing running slower than it should because the bag is the wrong shape, or a gauge heavier than the job needs so you pay for material you throw away. Those are all things you can put a figure on, so work out what they are costing you now and set that against a quote for a specification built around the job.

A standard product is the better answer when it already works, volumes are modest and nothing is going wrong. We will tell you which of those two situations you are in. If a stock size does the job, we would rather supply that than engineer something you do not need.

Can you copy a bag or film we already buy elsewhere?

Usually yes. Send a sample, or the dimensions, gauge and colour from the old specification, and we will work out what the material is doing and quote a match. Print can be reproduced from your artwork. If the original was over-engineered or under-performing we will point that out and suggest a change, rather than copy a fault into a new run.

Is there a setup or origination cost on a bespoke item?

It depends on the specification, so it is confirmed in your quotation rather than fixed in advance. Printed work generally involves origination for the artwork, while a plain bag in a new size usually does not. Ask us to itemise the quote so you can see clearly what is one-off setup and what is charged per unit.

Can we trial a bespoke specification before committing to a full run?

Yes. We support one-off bespoke trials so you can run the material on your own line before ordering volume. A trial shows things a specification sheet cannot, such as how the film behaves through a sealer, how it stacks and how operators handle it. If the trial shows something needs changing, we adjust the specification and quote production from the version that worked.

What can you change about the film itself, not just the bag?

We can adjust strength, elasticity, slip, stiffness, thickness and recycled content, because we extrude the film as well as convert it into finished products at our Blackburn factory. In practice that means a bag can be made stiffer so it stands open on a packing bench, more slippery so it feeds through a machine, or thinner without losing the strength the job needs.
