What are bed and mattress covers used for?

Bed and mattress covers are polythene bags used to protect a mattress, divan base or headboard from dust, damp, scuffs and dirty hands between the point it leaves a factory or a bedroom and the point it arrives somewhere clean. Mattress manufacturers bag finished units straight off the line. Furniture retailers bag them again for home delivery. Removals firms and self-storage operators bag them because a mattress carried through a doorway and dropped in a van picks up everything the floor has to offer.

The cover matters most at the moments nobody plans for: a wet loading bay, a van floor, a storage unit with a concrete slab, a customer's hallway. A mattress that arrives visibly marked gets rejected even when there is nothing structurally wrong with it, which is the return the cover is there to prevent.

What size mattress cover do I need?

A mattress cover is specified by the layflat width, the length and the gusset or depth that lets the bag pass over the sides of the mattress. UK bed sizes give you the starting point, single, small double, double, king and super king, but mattress depth has grown a long way and a deep pocket-sprung unit will not go into a bag cut for a thin foam one.

Measure the mattress at its widest point, its full length and its depth including any pillow top, then add a little clearance so the bag goes on without a fight. Send us those three figures for each size you handle and we will convert them into finished bag dimensions. We manufacture to your dimensions rather than to a fixed range, so odd sizes, continental sizes, cot mattresses, divan bases and headboards are all made the same way.

What gauge should a bed or mattress cover be?

We manufacture bed and mattress covers from 40 to 120 micron. The lighter end of that range suits factory bagging and short single-trip despatch where the bag goes on in a clean environment and comes off at the customer. The heavier end suits removals, storage and multi-handling jobs, where the bag is dragged through doorways, loaded and unloaded more than once and expected to survive the journey intact.

A cover that splits on the first corner has not protected anything, so if your team is bagging in the field rather than on a line, specify up. We can also tune strength, elasticity and stiffness in the film, so a tougher grade at a moderate gauge is often a better answer than simply going thicker and paying for material you do not need.

Can mattress covers be printed with warnings or branding?

Yes. We print bed and mattress covers to your artwork, so you can carry a company name, a size marking, handling instructions or any warning wording that you are required to display. You supply the artwork and the wording you need, and we manufacture the covers to match it. That is worth doing where covers travel into a customer's home, or where warehouse staff need to identify sizes from a stack without opening anything.

Colour works alongside print. Clear film is the usual choice because pickers and drivers can see the product and read any labels through the bag. Where you want the contents hidden, or you use colour to separate sizes and grades on a rack, we manufacture in a colour you specify.

What thickness of mattress bag do I need for a house removal?

For removals, choose from the heavier end of our 40 to 120 micron range. A mattress being carried down stairs, through door frames and into a van gets dragged and caught far more than one bagged on a production line, and a light dust cover will not survive that. If the same bag has to come off, go back on and travel again, specify heavier still.

Will a polythene mattress cover stop damp getting into a mattress in storage?

A cover keeps rain, condensation drips and airborne damp off the outside of a mattress, which is most of the problem in an unheated storage unit or a garage. It will not dry out a mattress that was already damp when you bagged it, and sealing moisture in makes things worse. Make sure the mattress is dry before it goes in the bag, and for long storage leave the open end unsealed so air can move.

Do you make covers for divan bases and headboards as well as mattresses?

Yes. Divan bases, headboards, bed frames in parts and cot mattresses are all made the same way, cut to the dimensions you give us. Measure the widest point, the full length and the depth of each item and send those figures over. We manufacture to your sizes rather than to a fixed list, so awkward and non-standard pieces are not a problem.

Can you print a suffocation warning on the bag?

Yes. We print to your artwork, so you supply the exact warning wording and layout you need to carry and we manufacture the covers to match.
